Never forget

Next February sees the largely joyful anniversary of the opening of Pompey’s great Birdcage Club

Lenny Tench has just sent this to remind us that there was certainly a darker side – which still resonates elsewhere on a bigger stage:

  2. Well I could not make it through the whole thing without wanting to puke. Preferably over him. Unreal Yes a total Asshole

  3. As most people on this blog know, Rikki & Gary Farr’s father was the champion boxer Tommy Farr,, Tommy’s last fight was in 1953 – he was then 40 years of age.

In the sixties, as well as The Birdcage in Southsea,, Hoogstraten also ran clubs in Brighton, and also owned Deb Boutique on Regency Parade, which is just off Queens Road, Brighton.

The Royal Standard pub is in Queen’s Road., and after retiring from the ring in 1956, Tommy Farr became the landlord of the pub, and would have been there when Hoogstraten owned Deb Boutique.

Tommy died in Shoreham – where Hoogstraten grew up – in 1986.

I’d hazard a guess that Hoogstraten initially got to know Rikki & Gary – and probably Tommy – through living in Shoreham and running the pub in Queens Road.

Hoogstraten owned over 2,000 rented properties he had bought cheaply by 1980, and was regularly terrorising his sitting tenants to “encourage” them to vacate these properties. Many of these properties were in Brighton and Hove, an area which was then – and still is – one of the high private rented sectors in the country. A massive amount of these “homes” were poorly heated, badly maintained or out of date.

    What an asshole he was/is.

  4. …………………..A NASTY PIECE OF WORK ……………………………

  5. The strange thing was although he is obviously a very dangerous we all used to take the piss out of him when he’d come down the Cage with his mates from Brighton ,including if I remember rightly Annie Nightingale.
He was rather camp and we used to refer to him as NicholARSE!! And shout things like Hello Darling as he walked past
Very juvenile I know but possibly very dangerous if he’d taken offence, but I think he rather liked it!!
