POMPEY POP

Fraser/Allen RIP

I’m sorry to report the death of Andy Fraser, bass guitarist in Free who certainly played Pompey a few times – the Oasis, Kimbells, South Parade Pier and for sure the Guildhall at the Dance of Words in May 1968. In Rosemary we did a couple of support gigs to them, locally and in London, and they were nice guys. Free is about as heavy as it ever gets for me – partly that they were good players but also that they had a fine singer who worked with strong melodies.

I’m not sure that Daevid Allen ever played in Pompey – I took an obvious interest in the (real) old hippy despite the fact that he couldn’t spell – but he too died just a few days ago. Incidentally in the past twelve months, England spin bowler David Allen, cricket writer and broadcaster David Rayvern Allen and Gong guitarist Daevid Allen have all died. I find it a bit spooky, but they do say these things come in threes and I’m rather hoping that is the case – I haven’t finished the Guildhall exhibition yet.

RIP both
