POMPEY POP

A Question

From a pal of mine (Geoff Allman) in Manchester:

“Have you come across a guy called John Barker in Pompey. He’s supposed to be a blues guitarist amongst other things. Does the name ring a bell with you?”
My answer was no – anyone know anything?

  1. the only Barker I recall would be the fat bloke that ran that wonderful ‘aladdins cave’ of all things electrical in Fawcett Road…….!

  2. I think the lead guitarist for Sporting Life Blues Band was a guy called John Barker

  3. See reply

  4. There was and probably still is a brilliant guitarist called John Barker-originally a Leigh Park boy-Front Lawn school and then on to some den of inequity.

Think he was in a group called Spitting Image with Dave Marsh, Derek Joyce and in the very early days Geoff Casey. Roadies were Paul Edwards and Steve M.

Went onto form a band called Sporting Life with a gezzer called Wobby Attwood(good footballer), Mad man Marsh and Des who all played together.

Haven’t seen them for over 25 years.

JB should have been an internationally recognised player as he was certainly world class material.

Just found this-JB is in the red shirt, Joycie is looking pretty cool with black shirt and hair-the guy with the black shirt and skull cap looks like Robby Attwood and the geezer on the drums with his boobs out is deffo Mad man Marshie.

Old Ladies sitting at the front- I dont know

I wish them all the best
