The Independent article at http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/features/john-simons-interview-the-man-who-dresses-britains-style-tribes-celebrates-60-years-in-retail-10441317.html provides a brief (well, briefer than the Robert Elms-dominated  video) overview of John Simon’s obsession with clothes and his dedication to the cause.

  1. I really enjoyed this, despite Robert Elms, who seems to think he’s the star performer rather than the man who just asks the questions and then fades into the background. He wrote a really interesting book about the next generation (“The Way We Wore”) but annoys the shit out of me here.

  2. Shmutter? Robert should well know about that by the way he’s dressed for the film !! He’s got that annoying habit ( along with the likes of MPs such as George O – who ,incidentally, has dropped the habit since carrying on as chancellor!) of modifying his speech by leaving off letters ( Ow’s instead of How’s is an example) and clipping phrases to sound a bit ‘Cockney intellectual’ or vice versa.
Admittedly I haven’t watched all the interview but when he linked Otis Redding with Rodney Marsh I was on the offensive.

    • He (Elms)does a great show on BBC London every lunchtime Oscar but I know where you’re coming from as he can really get up ones nose!
His big brother was a bit of a face round Harrow way in 63/64 which makes him think he’s an expert on all things mod, when in fact he was a New Romantic who hung around with the Kemp brothers at the Camden Palace!

  3. Hah! Despite my grumble (and I did enjoy his book), Mr Simons is VERY interesting. Lovely history

  4. How crazy is this ? I was channel hopping and landed on Morecamde ( whom would have they’ve have played Pompey!!) and Wise and a very good guest spot for the Small Faces ! it as very good and watchable to the end.
