Allen Toussaint RIP

Lenny alerted me to the death of Allen Toussaint after a gig in Spain on Monday. He’ll always remind me of Lee Dorsey as that’s where I was first aware of his work but boy did he get around. Really one of the great ones.

A long URL but worth checking out:

  1. He was certainly an influence to a great number of keyboard players who play in that Orleans style, great style, great player !
To digress very slightly, is it just me, but I find it highly embarrassing to watch and listen to Hugh Laurie performing, using the term loosely, his interpretation of Orleans blues ? I’m not sure if it’s a piss take or he really is taking it seriously, please advise !!

  2. I think he’s serious, just not much cop.

    • Probably a fair comment. In my nasty teaching moments with arts students (any art form) I would ask them to tell me whether they felt the world really needed whatever work they were producing. I never NEVER have any problem with people doing stuff but does it NEED to be made public? It’s what I’d say about HL. Since I’m no pianist, he seems quite competent to me but his singing is a drag – what’s the point when I can listen to all the great blues & boogie pianist/singers whenever I wish?

  3. Nicely summed up, thank you Graham !!

  4. Allen Toussaint will be a big loss to the music world. His talent embraced so many genres. It would be interesting to see a list of who he collaborated with or wrote music for. I’m sure it would be a long one.
