I do as it happens – did a bit of ‘real’ typography as a student. This is the cover of a very recent reprint of one of my very favourite books about pop/rock – Nik Cohn’s AWOPBOPALOOBOPALOPBAMBOOM – which you will all know of course as the opening line of one of the greatest songs of all time
It was originally published with a very different cover in 1969. It’s subtitled “Pop from the Beginning” and Cohn says it’s a “jilted love letter” from a bloke who loved the first decade (plus) of pop/rock and then reckoned his great love had gone off with ‘someone’ else …
This new cover is by Matt Broughton and it’s a bit clever. As far as I know he’s borrowed every letter from somewhere in the world of pop/rock. That last B for example is unmistakable to anyone who listened to mid-60s folk-rock/psych?
But what about the rest?
