Merle Haggard RIP

Keith sent me a video of Merle and Willie Nelson at which point I didn’t realise Merle had died – on his birthday. He was one of the rougher guys on the country music scene which I confess is my preference and here is doing a song that the Grateful Dead covered nicely, later on.

  1. ..and of course Lowell Levinger (Banana of The Youngbloods) did a wonderful spoof of “Okie From Muskogee” entitled “Hippie From Olema”, whilst The Former Members covered “Sing Me Back Home”.

  2. though he wrote okie fom muskogee, old Merle was actually pretty fond of various susbstances….i don’t know the ‘Hippie from Olema’song mentioned above, but there are a couple of other hippie awnser backs- I’ll fix your flat tire Merle by the Pure Prairie League and Ray Wylie Hubbards ‘Up against the wall rednecks’. The whole world should hear RWH’s output of the past 20 years a truly great performer, but it was his Haggard awnser back that set him on his way.
