Double Cream

The issue is more interesting and mysterious. There’s a fascinating contribution from Mark on the Facebook site which makes me wonder for the first time, whether that October gig did ‘sort of’ happen – but only one number.

I recall Keith Dolan saying he saw Cream at the ‘Cage and they hardly played, yet I wrote down that (in December) they played at least “From 4 till Late”, “Rolling & Tumbling”, “Sitting on Top of the World”, “Down in the Bottom”, “Cat Squirrel” and “Sweet Wine”

PS There is a book Strange Brew: Eric Clapton & the British Blues Boom by Christopher Hjort (2007) which gives a diary of Cream, Clapton, Mayall etc. It says that on Saturday 8 October Ginger Baker ended the set at the University of Sussex with the “Toad” drum solo, before collapsing with “acute exhaustion”. He was taken to hospital. It adds that “it is possible that a couple of gigs are cancelled this week due to Baker’s recent collapse”. No gig is listed for Sunday 9 October

Against Saturday 3 December, it records Cream playing the Birdcage where Baker “collapses on stage” and “is rushed to the nearest hospital where he is found to have a sinus complaint. The group’s second set is cancelled”.
