December 1965

I’m working on a definitive list of acts that played at the Birdcage. There are three key sources, the list that has circulated for some years (pretty accurate – I don’t know who produced it), the Evening News Archives in the library (mostly, but not always reliable) and Geoff’s remarkable diary of all the Eastney dates – including most prices.

Mostly they match up which is great, but sometimes not and I have to search or ask around. Here for example is early December 1965

Thursday 2: Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band (5/-)

Friday 2: The (John? Alan?) Walker Group (4/-)

Saturday 4: The VIPs (4/-)

Sunday 5: Ready Steady Go! (TV) + Simon Dupree & Big Sound (3/-)

On that original list it shows the Alan Walker Group whereas Geoff’s diary says the John Walker Group. I have searched the internet (Strange Brew is a good site) but can’t find any reference to either name. I’m pretty sure incidentally that if it is John Walker, it isn’t anything to do with the bloke in the Walker Brothers.

Can anyone add anything?

  1. I’m working on the definitive list of all who played at South Parade Pier at present, and the work you & Mick have done (especially the “pre Barking Spider” years) has been invaluable, Dave! Seems the timing is right too, with the Pier re-opening next weekend. Apparently The Gaiety will be available for hire for bands/promoters, and also they’re putting on “traditional seaside shows” -whatever that means…

  2. My dad woked behind the bar on the pier. Got me Arthur English’s autograph when he appeared there mid 50’s

  3. or worked!

  4. Unfortunately lost in a house move along with my apprenticeship indentures.(I find it hard to eat apples these days).
