Flower Power

A crackingly psychedelic Bank Holiday weekend fifty years ago with releases by Traffic, Mothers of Invention (Absolutely Free) , the Crazy World of Arthur Brown at UFO and a Barbecue 67 event in Lincolnshire with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Pink Floyd, the Move, & Dantalian’s Chariot. Melody Maker ran a feature on the San Francisco/West Coast bands identifying “an air of rebellion, revolution, freedom and fun” with “drugs, mainly LSD and marijuana … an integral part of the scene”.

Meanwhile, more Flower Power. Mick has sent me this photo:

He says: “Another reunion gathering of three quarters of the Honky Tonk Band. Sadly Dave couldn’t make it. At?? the Havant Garden Centre! No that’s another story!”

  1. I meant to add the (then) little known Amen Corner were the only act at the Birdcage that weekend (Saturday night, just four bob), while the Tremeloes were at the Holiday Camp on Hayling and Jeff Beck at the Shoreline. I’ve also found another reference to the first Fairport gig, which confirms JR’s post last week.

  2. Do they sell grow your own kits like in Amsterdam? It was good to see Mick at the recent Shakin Stevens show at the Guildhall.
