POMPEY POP

Ray Thomas RIP

I’m grateful to Albie for informing me of his passing – my first club night out in Pompey was the old Rendezvous (Autumn 1964) where I saw the original Moody Blues, and very fine they were, with lots of R&B, soul, James Brown etc. Sons of Man supported and there’s a story based on the fact that Ray was being overtaken as lead singer by guitarist Denny Laine (“We’ve already said …”). Anyway, Ray Thomas was impressed by Sons’ bass player Dave Yearley, when he switched to flute, so after the gig he picked Dave’s brains and became a flautist.
